Sports massage is designed to assist in correcting problems and imbalances in soft tissue that are caused from repetitive and strenuous physical activity. Receiving regular sports massage, prior to and after exercise, can enhance performance, aid recovery and prevent injury. The aim of sports massage is to reduce stress and tension which has been built up in soft tissue due to regular exercise.
Tips to get the most out of your massage:
  • Arrive on time

The intent behind sports massage:
Sports massage is designed to address and prevent sports-related injuries such as strains, sprains, muscle tightness and fatigue. By targeting the areas that are prone to overuse or stress, a sports massage can help reduce the risk of injury, speed up recovery and optimise athletic performance.

The therapist will understand the anatomy and biomechanics involved in various sports and can tailor their techniques to meet the clients unique needs. Specific injury prevention, stretching exercises and other self-care practices can be advised to compliment the massage treatment.

Who can benefit from a sports massage:
Athletes can benefit from frequent sports massage. This type of massage is designed to help recovery from intense exercise, competitions and training.

Individuals who take part in recreational sports can also benefit from a sports massage such as fun runs, boot camps, sports.

People who don’t take part in regular activities can also benefit. Everyday life can cause aches, soreness, stiff muscles, decrease range of motion and lower flexibility. So its important to book your treatments and look after your body.

Techniques used in sport massage:
DEEP TISSUE MANIPULATION involves applying focused pressure to release tension and knots in the deeper layers of muscle tissue This can help reduce muscle soreness, increase blood flow and promote faster healing.

STRETCHING techniques are used to lengthen muscles and improve flexibility, which can enhance performance and reduce the risk of injury.

FRICTION TECHNIQUES involve applying pressure across the muscle fibres to break up scar tissue, promote circulation and improve muscle function.

The difference between sport massage and regular massage:
One of the main differences is the techniques used during the treatment. While regular massage typically aims to relax the entire body and provide general stress relief, a sports massage specifically targets the muscle groups that are frequently engaged in your chosen sport or physical activity.

Sports massage can include deep tissue manipulation, stretching and friction techniques to alleviate muscle tension, increase flexibility and improve range of motion.
